Abstract

This study delves into the multifaceted concept of Jihad within Islamic thought, elucidating its historical evolution, theological foundations, and contemporary interpretations. By scrutinizing primary Islamic texts—the Quran and Hadith—alongside scholarly exegesis, this research delineates the nuanced distinctions between the greater Jihad (the spiritual struggle against sin) and the lesser Jihad (armed struggle in the path of God). The study further explores the sociopolitical contexts that have influenced Jihad's interpretation and implementation throughout Islamic history. Through a comprehensive literature review and analysis, this study aims to demystify the concept of Jihad, highlighting its spiritual significance and the conditions under which it transitions into a call for armed struggle. The findings propose a reevaluation of the narrative surrounding Jihad in modern discourse, emphasizing the need for a contextual understanding of Islamic texts and traditions.
