Abstract

The relationship between gender and identity in 20th-century visual arts represents a pivotal theme in the evolution of artistic expression. This article explores how artists across different movements and regions grappled with gender identity, challenging traditional norms and promoting new narratives of self-representation. Through an examination of feminist art, queer theory, and gender performativity, the article illuminates the ways in which gender was both constructed and deconstructed within the visual arts. Artists used various media to critique social conventions, highlight marginalized voices, and promote a more inclusive understanding of identity. This article traces the historical development of these themes, analyzing key works, movements, and theoretical perspectives that have shaped the discourse around gender in the 20th century.
