Abstract

The relationship between women and Islam has been a subject of significant discourse throughout history, particularly in the context of religious interpretations that shape gender roles within Muslim societies. In contemporary settings, the role of women has evolved drastically, influenced by both internal and external factors, including shifts in cultural values, global women's movements, and changing religious interpretations. This study examines the diverse interpretations of Islamic texts and their influence on women's social, political, and economic roles across different societies. The paper critically analyzes how traditional and modern readings of the Qur'an and Hadith have impacted the agency of women in Islamic communities, particularly in areas such as education, employment, politics, and family dynamics. Furthermore, the study investigates how religious scholars and activists have contributed to or challenged these interpretations to promote a more inclusive understanding of gender equality within Islamic contexts. By exploring the intersection of Islamic teachings, religious authority, and societal expectations, this research highlights the tensions between conservatism and progressive movements advocating for women's rights within Islamic law. The paper also considers how these religious perspectives vary across different cultural contexts, reflecting the broader socio-political environment in which they are interpreted. Ultimately, this study calls for a more nuanced and flexible interpretation of religious texts that takes into account the changing realities of Muslim women in the 21st century, aiming for a balance between faith, tradition, and the recognition of women's autonomy and equality in contemporary societies.
