Abstract

This article explores the evolution of Islamic law from its inception in the 7th century to its contemporary interpretations and applications. It begins by outlining the origins of Islamic jurisprudence, grounded in the Quran and the Hadith, and the formation of the classical legal schools (Madhahib). The study then transitions into the dynamics of Islamic law’s expansion, adaptation, and integration into diverse socio-political landscapes through the centuries. By examining key historical milestones, such as the Ottoman Empire's codification efforts and the impact of colonialism, the paper highlights the transformative processes that have shaped Islamic legal thought and practice. The latter part of the article focuses on contemporary challenges and reforms within Islamic law, including issues related to gender, human rights, and the influence of international law. Through this comprehensive analysis, the article aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the complexities and continuity within Islamic legal traditions, offering insights into its future trajectory in a globalized context.
