Keywords:
Islamic thought, modernity, epistemology, reform, hermeneutics, intellectual traditionAbstract
This study explores the dynamic relationship between Islamic thought and modernity, aiming to provide a renewed epistemological framework that reconciles traditional Islamic intellectual heritage with contemporary philosophical and sociocultural developments. The paper traces historical trajectories of Islamic philosophy, theology, and jurisprudence, highlighting moments of intellectual openness and reform in response to societal transformations. It emphasizes the necessity of adopting critical reasoning and contextual hermeneutics in interpreting classical Islamic texts, arguing that such approaches enable a meaningful engagement with modern scientific, ethical, and sociopolitical challenges. Through comparative analysis, the study identifies convergences and tensions between Islamic epistemology and modern thought paradigms, including rationalism, humanism, and pluralism. Ultimately, the research advocates for an informed, reflective dialogue that preserves core Islamic values while embracing modern epistemic methodologies, thereby contributing to a holistic vision of intellectual progress, social justice, and ethical governance.
